These are LDS and parenting books.

As a part of his doctoral studies, John Hilton III is "studying what
happens when books are made available for free." He worked with
"Deseret Book and they have made 8 of their books available for free."
They can all be downloaded at http://deseretbook.com/free. Several of
the books are ones you might be interested in. The books are:

Christmas can be hard to make happen while in law school. We never have a ton of money to spend on Christmas, but we still have lots of people to buy for. Here are some fun ideas for under $10.

For the Whole Family:
We have gone to Portrait Innovations every year so far to get a family picture taken. You get a ton of pictures for $9.95. There are no other fees! With that $9.95 we have a gift for my parents, the in-laws, the grandparents, and really anyone else you want to give them to! We give the bigger ones to the parents, the midsized ones to the grandparents, and the wallets in a Christmas card to all the brothers and sisters. Who doesn't like a picture, right? The closest location is at the shops at Riverwoods 4801 N University Ave Provo, UT 84604-5573 (801) 426-2697. Here is the website and a list of what pictures and sizes you get.

For a Sister or a Friend:
My sister just got this wallet from Target and I love it! Only $9.99. Not bad, and it comes in several colors. Target has some pretty good prices on some cute jewelry too. Make sure and check out the dollar bins too!
I also like these headbands from Everything Goes. They are $10. A friend of a friend makes them and I think they are so cute!
For a child:
Last year we bought this tent for our kids from Ikea for $9.99. They loved it! It comes apart nicely and fits under a bed.
We also got this train set from Ikea. This set is $9.99. It's quite a bit cheaper than the name brand trains and we have been happy with it.
For a Brother or a Friend:
This may sound a little ghetto, but last year we gave a couple people used books from amazon. If you have a favorite book that you would like to give you can search on Amazon and check out the used prices. We gave this book and got it for about $8.

Tips for Surviving Finals

I think no matter what year your husband is in school, finals time can be hard! I thought I would share some of the things that have helped my husband and I get through them in the past. Please share any ideas you have!

Plan something fun for when one final is over or for when all of finals are over or both. I feel like this gives us both something to look forward to and something else to focus on besides time apart. This year we are going to Jump On It after his first final is over. He only has two this year, (yay) so when his last one is over, we are going to Las Vegas for a night!
Hang out with other Law Partners! There are lots of planned activities that you can attend or plan one yourself! I am all for a play date at my house if you are interested! I have a 3 year old and a one year old who are quite bored with just me!
Find a new hobby that takes up a lot of your time like blogging, sewing, organizing your pictures on your computer (currently doing), or organizing your itunes account (currently doing).
Make a finals survival kit for your husband. At the beginning of finals week you could give him some healthy snacks and some unhealthy snacks, a highlighter, ear plugs, tabs (my husband swears by these), travel size tylenol, $10 to his signature card so he can get snacks at the vending machines or any of the restaurants on campus, or even just surprise him with cookies on his carrel.

Headband Party

I'm thinking about attending a headband party December 3 from 6:30pm-9pm. The creator behind all these darling headbands is Carrie with Navy Perl. Her GMa used to own a vintage fabric shop back in the 70's, so you can only imagine how amazing the fabric is that she uses. There are so many different styles to choose from!!

Let me know if you are interested in going with me! It's at an old friend's house of mine and I am thinking they will make cute gifts!

March Hobby Night Orders

The next hobby night is March 4th at 7pm. If you would like to come, you need to place your order by Saturday, December 5th. We are going to be making these cute blocks. The blocks are done with scrapbook paper. I will not have the exact same scrapbook paper that is pictured here, but I will have some really cute options. You can count on a black themed paper set and a brown themed paper set. I will offer brown and black ribbon for around the blocks. I may also bring a few other options if I find some really cute prints. You also have the option of bringing your own paper and ribbon. You would need 2 half sheets of 2 different patterns of paper (two halves would make one whole piece the size of a 12x12).

The cost is $6 for dues paying law partners and $8 if you have not payed dues. If you can come send an email to justinaselim(at)gmail(dot)com and let me know if you want the brown option, black option or bring your own paper option. Money is due by Dec 19th. Hope to see you there!

Hobby Night - Recipe Exchange

The recipe exchange was not quite as big of a hit as the card exchange. Only one person brought something (that would be me). A few people asked for the recipe which I forgot to bring, haha. So, to whoever wants it, here it is! I found it here.

Pumpkin Bread

Ingredients

3 cups canned pumpkin puree
1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
4 cups white sugar
6 eggs
4 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour three 9x5 inch loaf pans.
In a large bowl, mix together the pumpkin, oil, sugar, and eggs. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves; stir into the pumpkin mixture until well blended. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour. The top of the loaf should spring back when lightly pressed.
You can also make muffins and small loaves using this recipe; bake for 30 to 35 minutes.

I write with sad news. Professor Michael Goldsmith passed away yesterday after his long battle with A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig's Disease). I join those of you who knew Professor Goldsmith in expressing my gratitude for my association with him. We will miss him. Below I have attached two links regarding Professor Goldsmith’s passing as well as his obituary. Sincerely,

HEBER CITY, Utah Michael Goldsmith, age 58, of Heber City, Utah died on Sunday, November 1, 2009 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany after a three year struggle with ALS. Michael was born in Tel Aviv, Israel on March 6, 1951 and spent his childhood in Forest Hills, Queens. He received a B.S. in industrial and labor relations and political science from Cornell University in 1972. In 1975, he obtained a law degree from Cornell Law School. Following law school, he spent one year clerking for United States District Judge, Albert W. Coffrin in Burlington, Vt. He also served as Deputy State's Attorney in Chittenden County, before moving to Washington D.C. to serve as Senior Staff Counsel to the House Select Committee on Assassinations from 1977-1979. The following year he spent as Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia, Pa. before turning to the career path for which he was most widely known, that of law professor. Michael taught at Vanderbilt University Law School in Nashville, Tenn., from 1980 to 1983. From 1983 to 1985, he served as counsel to the New York State Organized Crime Task Force in White Plains, N.Y. He directed operations against various mob figures, culminating in his testimony against John Gotti in the late 1980s. Thereafter, he returned to teach, this time, as Professor of Law at Brigham Young University's J. Reuben Clark Law School. He had been voted "Best Professor of the Year" by the student body six times. Devoted to his students, Michael continued to teach even after his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In 1994 President Bill Clinton appointed Goldsmith to the U.S. Sentencing Commission; he served on the Commission until 1998, serving as vice-chairman from 1995 to 1997. After Michael was diagnosed with ALS aka Lou Gehrig's disease he was determined to become an ALS fundraising advocate. While attending a Baltimore Orioles fantasy baseball camp, Michael realized that July 4, 2009 would mark the 70th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's farewell speech at Yankee Stadium. He called on major league baseball to make July 4, 2009, ALS-Lou Gehrig Day. On July 4, 2009, every Major League Baseball park in which a game was being played held on- field ceremonies commemorating Lou Gehrig's famous speech. On that day, in Yankee Stadium, Michael Goldsmith himself threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Michael is survived by his wife, Carolyn Wilson Goldsmith of Heber City, Utah; his mother, Anitta Burg and her companion, George Imperato of Loudonville, N.Y.; his children, Austen and Jillian; his sister Edna Goldsmith and her husband, Tim Fleming of Troy; his sister Lynn Goldsmith and her husband Peter Mark of Newton, Ma. as well as their children Zachary, Ian, Melissa and Allison; and stepsister, Evelyn Burg of NYC. Michael was predeceased by his father, Henry L. Goldsmith; a sister, Debra Goldsmith; and his stepfather, Klaus Burg. Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany, N.Y. on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in the Beth Emeth Cemetery in Loudonville, N.Y.
