I write with sad news. Professor Michael Goldsmith passed away yesterday after his long battle with A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig's Disease). I join those of you who knew Professor Goldsmith in expressing my gratitude for my association with him. We will miss him. HEBER CITY, Utah Michael Goldsmith, age 58, of Heber City, Utah died on Sunday, November 1, 2009 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany after a three year struggle with ALS. Michael was born in Tel Aviv, Israel on March 6, 1951 and spent his childhood in Forest Hills, Queens. He received a B.S. in industrial and labor relations and political science from Cornell University in 1972. In 1975, he obtained a law degree from Cornell Law School. Following law school, he spent one year clerking for United States District Judge, Albert W. Coffrin in Burlington, Vt. He also served as Deputy State's Attorney in Chittenden County, before moving to Washington D.C. to serve as Senior Staff Counsel to the House Select Committee on Assassinations from 1977-1979. The following year he spent as Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia, Pa. before turning to the career path for which he was most widely known, that of law professor. Michael taught at Vanderbilt University Law School in Nashville, Tenn., from 1980 to 1983. From 1983 to 1985, he served as counsel to the New York State Organized Crime Task Force in White Plains, N.Y. He directed operations against various mob figures, culminating in his testimony against John Gotti in the late 1980s. Thereafter, he returned to teach, this time, as Professor of Law at Brigham Young University's J. Reuben Clark Law School. He had been voted "Best Professor of the Year" by the student body six times. Devoted to his students, Michael continued to teach even after his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In 1994 President Bill Clinton appointed Goldsmith to the U.S. Sentencing Commission; he served on the Commission until 1998, serving as vice-chairman from 1995 to 1997. After Michael was diagnosed with ALS aka Lou Gehrig's disease he was determined to become an ALS fundraising advocate. While attending a Baltimore Orioles fantasy baseball camp, Michael realized that July 4, 2009 would mark the 70th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's farewell speech at Yankee Stadium. He called on major league baseball to make July 4, 2009, ALS-Lou Gehrig Day. On July 4, 2009, every Major League Baseball park in which a game was being played held on- field ceremonies commemorating Lou Gehrig's famous speech. On that day, in Yankee Stadium, Michael Goldsmith himself threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Michael is survived by his wife, Carolyn Wilson Goldsmith of Heber City, Utah; his mother, Anitta Burg and her companion, George Imperato of Loudonville, N.Y.; his children, Austen and Jillian; his sister Edna Goldsmith and her husband, Tim Fleming of Troy; his sister Lynn Goldsmith and her husband Peter Mark of Newton, Ma. as well as their children Zachary, Ian, Melissa and Allison; and stepsister, Evelyn Burg of NYC. Michael was predeceased by his father, Henry L. Goldsmith; a sister, Debra Goldsmith; and his stepfather, Klaus Burg. Services at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Avenue, Albany, N.Y. on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in the Beth Emeth Cemetery in Loudonville, N.Y. In its place we will have a play date at 2 PM in the Rex Lee Reading room on the 3rd floor of the law school. Hopefully in the spring we will be able to reschedule the Fire Station Tour.

Gifts of the Heart Exchange (GOTHE)

The MBASA (MBA Spouse Association) has invited LP to participate in the Gifts of the Heart Exchange (GOTHE). For those of you who don't know, the Gifts of the Heart Exchange is like a free garage sale--only with nicer things. You come and take home what you need. Pretty simple! It happens twice a semester and is a great resource for FREE clothes and baby/toddler gear and toys when money is so tight. We are looking for volunteers to help sort clothes, watch kids in the nursery and prepare the church building for this event. Please look over the volunteer request and spreadsheet and sign up (you or your husband) when you can. I will be in the nursery Friday morning from 9-11 if it helps to know that a friendly face will be with your kids. LP needs to provide at least 15 volunteers. Thank you in advance for your service.

If you have clothing or baby gear that you or your kids have outgrown (or just don't wear anymore), you can donate it to our event. We accept good quality children's, women's and men's clothing, baby gear. If you have a large item, bring a picture of the item only and arrange for pickup from your home. We do not accept electronics, trashy household items, or anything that you wouldn't be willing to take home with you.

Please sort your clothing donations into these categories and put them in a marked bag--I use a permanent marker on a plastic Macey's bag:

We need you to make this happen! Please sign up--you and your husbands--on our lovely online spreadsheet. Be sure to look at all three tabs on the bottom left corner of the screen.

We have quite a few opportunities for volunteering for both you or your husbands. If you (or your husband) volunteer for 2 or more hours you will be eligible to attend a special "volunteers only" shopping hour on Friday, Nov. 6, from 8-9pm. In order to be more efficient with our time, we ask that volunteers no longer take clothes as they sort through them.

Get directions here. (The children's hour scheduled for October 21st at 10 AM at the Farm Country at Thanksgiving Point has been changed to Tuesday October 20th.)

• Hobby Night - Wednesday, October 21st at 7pm Card and Recipe Exchange room 306. No rsvp needed for the recipe exchange. Just bring your favorite recipe to taste and have the recipe ready to let people copy. Come and check out the cards and taste the food even if you are not participating in the exchanges.

Card Exchange RSVP

Wednesday, October 21st 2009, at 7pm - We will be having a homemade card and recipe exchange. In case you have never been to one we will all make a card for each person coming. If there are 10 people coming, you will make 10 cards and give one to everyone and then you leave with 10 fun new cards. It is also a great way to get some new ideas for cards. If you would like to participate in the card exchange please email me at justinaselim(at)gmail(dot)com or leave a comment here before Friday, October 16th so that I can let everyone know how many cards they will need to make. For the recipe exchange, there is not a rsvp needed. Just bring your favorite thing to make and have the recipe ready for people to copy down or you could bring it already printed out on a few cards if you wanted. Feel free to come and hang out, check out the cards, and taste the yummy food even if you are not participating in any of the exchanges. Room 306.
