Babysitting Opportunity

I was wondering if you know a law partner or could send out an email to see if anyone is interested in making a little bit of money babysitting my 3 month old daughter the first two weeks in January.  I would need someone who lived in Orem or Provo who is available in the afternnoon Mon-Thur  while my husband is in class and I am at work.  It could be a job for the semester if I decide to continue working.  If anyone is interested they can email me.

Thanks,
Cindy Unwin

If you are interested in babysitting, please leave a comment and I will get you Cindys e-mail address.

Merry Christmas!

Law Partners hopes everyone's finals went well and you all enjoy your Christmas break with your spouse!  Let's face it, when law school is through our spouse will probably not have so much time off around Christmas & other holidays.  For those of you traveling drive safely and for those staying here, enjoy your relaxing time in Provo.

The only activity that is ongoing over the break is exercise group. Same time & place.

I hope we can all remember the true meaning of Christmas and have a wonderful time with those we love.

The class begins with basic hula steps and will include both Kahiko (ancient) and 'Auana (modern) style dances.   You will also be introduced to 'oli ( chant), mele (hawaiian songs), and 'olelo (hawaiian language).  If you have a pa'u (hula skirt), or lava lava (sarong), please bring it with you, although it is not necessary.

Come and enjoy a rich cultural experience, and a good workout at the same time.   We will also be preparing a number for the law school talent show in February if you would like to participate.   Remember, the class is every Thursday, from 5:30-6:15pm at the law school, so if you can't come this week- hope you can join us another time.  No class on Thanksgiving.

1L Rep. Position

Hey 1L Spouses,

I have recently received a few e-mails inquiring about the 1L Rep position and when and how it will be determined. I was the 1L rep last year and the duties and responsibilities are as follows. The 1L rep is supposed to help all 1L spouses feel welcome and get involved in Law Partners. You need to be friendly and outgoing & willing to plan a couple of activities just for 1L spouses. You also will be a full on board member and able to attend board meetings once in a while.

I encourage anyone interested in this position to attend as many activities as possible, so the current board can get to know you before the position is decided. More details about what to do to let us know you are interested will be posted within the next couple weeks. If you have anymore questions you can email me at sarahbanks170@gmail.com. Thanks!

Affordable Dance Classes

Hi all,

I have decided to teach a Dance Movement Class this fall. It will be
a class for ages 3 to 5, for both boys and girls ( I am flexible on ages if you think your child is a good fit for the class). I am charging a
very small fee of $35 a semester (which is roughly $8.25/month) and if
you know anything about dance, that deal is unheard of!

I have danced for 20 years, taught dance for 5 and have professional
dance performance experience. I have taken the last 6 years or so off
and I just decided it's time to get rolling again. What inspired me
to actually make it happen is all of the classes that I want to put my
3 year old son in that my husband and I are having a hard time
figuring out how to make it work with our small MBA budget. This is
why the class is so cheap, I am hoping to give student families an
option.

The breakdown of the class is as follows:

Title: Dance Movement

What is "Dance Movement"? This class will be an introduction to many
forms of dance including ballet, jazz, hip hop and modern. The main
goal of the class is to get your child comfortable and confident with
movement and dancing with music. Secondary, I will be teaching them
basic dance technique.

When: Once a week, 50 minutes. Monday 10:30am to 11:20 or Tuesday,
4pm to 4:50

Where: TBA (Provo)

Cost: $35 (Sept- Dec) There will be another class starting in January,
tuition will be due again at that time.

Recital: There will be one Spring recital, this is optional.

Dance Attire: Comfortable clothes (no jeans) that they can move in.
They will dance barefoot, so no purchasing of dance shoes. Dance
shoes are not needed at this basic level.

Class Size: I am going to cap the class at 15. If I have more
response and demand, I will consider adding an additional classes.

Please email me directly with questions or confirmation that you would
like to enroll.

I am creating a website (hopefully done this week) that will have all
of the information as well as registration options.

Class is open to all Utah residents, so feel free to pass onto anyone
who might be interested.

Please email me directly if you are interested or have any
questions. (rhandi@gmail.com)

Happy Dancing!

Home Buying Class

Have you ever wondered about the benefits of owning your own home? Wondered if it was better to rent than own? Been confused with all the different loan options out there?

Come Tuesday night to the Tanner building (W408--the new wing) at 8pm to be educated in home buying! We'll have Bryan Graves and Bob Lavender presenting to us. If you have any specific questions, email me directly (clairelaine@gmail.com). Feel free to bring your spouse!

***

A pilot by trade, in 1999, Bob had an idea about creating a network of real estate agents who would serve as cultural contacts for LDS church members around the country. This idea became “LDSAgents.com,” an Internet-based service that connects clients with more than 3000 real estate professionals around the country.

In addition to the many LDS agents associated with LDSAgents.com, the company has hundreds of non-LDS agents on its database, and this has worked out great in areas where there are few LDS members. LDSAgents.com advertises on BYU-TV and in other venues commonly seen by church members. The company has assisted nearly 5000 clients in the last ten years.

Bob is a very people-oriented person who makes a conscious effort to employ gospel principles in his relationships with the many people he meets in the course of business. He works himself nearly to death every day talking to clients and agents, and managing referrals around the country and in Canada. He is married to Carol Lavender, a native Texan, and they are the parents of four children.

President Position

Heidi Bradford

I grew up in Meridian, Idaho. Served in the Ireland Dublin Mission from 2003-05. Student taught in Washington D.C. Jan-March of 2006. Graduated from BYU in Elementary Education in 2006. Married Trent in June of 2006. Taught 6th grade at Canyon View Middle School in Cedar City, Utah from 2006-08. Became a Mom in February of 2008. Became a law student spouse in August 2008. Love singing, racquetball, volleyball, hiking, reading, writing, and watching movies (while consuming popcorn). Favorite candy: sour patch kids.

Law Partners has positively affected my law school experience and I'd like to perpetuate that for other law student spouses. Up to this time,I have attended LP forums, children's hour activities, hobby night, dinner group, and socials. I've also helped with the Gifts of the Heart Exchange multiple times and look forward to serving with the MBASA in that effort. Currently I'm serving as the LP Treasurer and help organize the LP forums. As LP President, I see myself maintaining Law Partners rather than considerably changing it. I'd like to bring book club from an online discussion to a meet and discuss event, but besides that, I'd like to maintain the activities that are already ongoing and continue to build interest and involvement in Law Partners. I would sincerely appreciate your vote. Please vote for me, Heidi Bradford, for LP President 2010-11.

Vice-President Position

Tausha Bentz

I would like to hold the position of Vice President because first and foremost I have been very impressed with Law Partners this last year and would love to become much more involved. I love to plan activities and always make sure they are exciting and fun! I am dependable and will complete any task that is given to me. I will be a leader who listens to the ideas of others and incorporates them when making decisions.

As I said earlier, I have been very impressed with this last year’s presidency. I love that they have incorporated technology such as a blog, email, and Google group to help keep everyone informed. I believe the most important part of a presidency member is to keep everyone informed! If elected, I will do my best to keep everyone informed, especially new 1L members. I will also continue the current activities and create simple surveys to find out more of your interests and plan activities to meet all of your interests such as sports, music, games, etc. Above all, I have a love for life and will bring a pizzazz to Law Partners that you will never forget.

I am number six of seven children and was raised in Manti, Utah. I am married to Steve Bentz, a 1L, of Tempe Arizona and have a beautiful 3 month old daughter named Andrea Grace. Growing up I was very involved in athletics and music. I play softball, basketball, ultimate Frisbee, water sports, and hunting. I play the piano, violin, and organ. But, my two passions would have to be singing and dancing. I have held several leadership positions both in the community and in the church. I just graduated with my degree in Elementary Education!

Devan Gardner

Hi I'm Devan Gardner, my husband is Preston is a 1L. I am from Scottsdale Arizona and love it there. I'm the youngest of five girls all who are my best friends. Preston and I have been married 4 1/2 years and have a son, Conway who just turned 1. We are expecting our second this June and I'm super excited/scared!haha! I have some college done- mainly art classes and can't wait to be able to finish up and preferably major in art history. I love art, fashion, crafting, cooking and trying to learn to sew.

I would like to be Vice Presidnet of Law Partners for many reasons mostly because I have LOVED being a part of this fun organization this year. Having lived in AZ my whole life and moving out to Provo has been an adjustment for me. Being away from family and friends has been hard and being able to have Law Partners has been such a blessing in my life. I have met so many wonderful people who I know will be life long friends. Not only is moving away a difficult process but the absence of out spouces can make it that more of a struggle and to have such a support group of people who are going through the exact same thing is so comforting. I want to be involved in the group that has made my first year such a great experience and be able to give that experience to someone else. I want to give all my talents to this group, maybe a game night or movie night once in a while, or organizing special reality tv viewing parties- cause we all have at least one guilty pleasure! (mine is the bachelor!) Most of all I just want to do all I can to make Law Partners even stronger next year and be able to help others have a really enjoyable law school experience!

Historian Position

Sarah Banks

Hi, I am Sarah Banks and my husband Aaron is a 1L. I am originally from San Diego Ca, and I am the 3rd of 4 children, and I have 8 step-siblings. Aaron and I have 4 kids ranging from a year and a half to 8 years old. We are living in Wymount and really like Provo. My interests include: baking, hanging out with friends, exercising, spending time with my family, blogging, and making cute hair bows for my girls. I began my education at BYU-Hawaii, and would love to finish it in Culinary Arts. I have loved getting to know some fellow law partners this year, and hope to serve as Historian for the 2010-2011 school year

Law Partners is a wonderful organization to help give support to spouses of law students. I have truly enjoyed being on the board this past year, and feel that I have done a great job at getting other 1L spouses introduced and involved in the organization. Serving as Historian next school year would give me a chance to serve and be able to keep the blog updated and the LP Google group up to date as well. Historian would be a great fit for me and I would continue to try to get people involved who have not been to activities before, and keep those who are active informed & interested. I would improve Law Partners by being myself, and being a friendly face that old and new people would feel comfortable around. I am dedicated, hardworking, and outgoing, and those are traits that board members need to have to keep LP a great thing.

Treasurer Position

Wendy Nichols

I’m Wendy Nichols and my husband Brett will be graduating in 2011. We’re from Salt Lake City. I have a BS from Weber State University. I am a nurse at an emergent care clinic for uninsured/underserved populations. I served a medical mission to Ecuador where I met my husband. We have two daughters: Katie, 3 years, and Amanda, 1 ½. I enjoy reading, scrapbooking, card-making, sewing, and crafts. My dream would be to have more time to dedicate to them! I love playing outdoors with my girls and exploring new places. We love getting to know other law families!

My name is Wendy Nichols. I am running for Treasurer on the Law Partners board. I have been involved with Law Partners for two years, serving this year as Vice President, and I’m very excited for another great year. I’ve gained valuable experience about the workings of Law Partners by corroborating with other board members, learning about the budget and finances of the organization, and trying to meet the changing needs of our members. Most importantly, I’ve gained many friends and associations through meeting other Law Partners and members of the legal community. I believe this is a group that can strengthen and serve one another, lift each other through difficult times, celebrate many successes, learn from one another, and make our experience here at the J. Reuben Clark Law School uplifting and positive. If I could improve one thing about Law Partners in the coming year, it would be to increase these personal connections between members. The heart of our group lies in learning from those around us and knowing that we are having similar experiences. These new friendships can lend great strength and create bonds that hopefully last a lifetime.

Lynda Stratford

I’m Lynda Stratford. I’m from Mesa, AZ and lived there my whole life until I went on a mission to Taipei, Taiwan. Three months after I returned home I started attending BYU studying Chinese. I met my husband Robert while we were taking the same class and we got married almost a year later. We lived in China for one year before receiving our undergrad degrees. We have a baby boy, Simon, who was born in June 2008. Robert will graduate in 2012 and we expect that our family will eventually return to China on a more permanent basis.

I may have lived in Provo for close to seven years now, but this past year is the first time that I’ve really started to feel like a part of a community, especially since being married. I love what Law Partners offers to spouses of law students. I want to help others feel like a part of this community. I think I can reach out to other “law partners” that haven’t seen all the great things this group has to offer. As treasurer I can do all these things and make use of my talents with numbers and money. After all, I worked at a bank for 5 years :) I know there have been new changes to the schedule this year but I don’t know what it was like before. I do think the activities and forums and dinner group have been great. The biggest change I would work on is to reach out to more spouses. I don’t feel like the blog or google group reach out to enough of them and I know a lot of them don’t even know about Law Partners. With greater turn out I know the activities and community will be even better.

Secretary Position

DeAnn Mehr

I think by now there are many of you who know me and my story, but if you don’t, here’s a brief introduction. My name is DeAnn Mehr & my husband’s name is Dan- he is a 1L. We have been married for 10 years and have 3 children: Todd is 9 years old, Ian is just about 7 and Lucy is 1 ½. This is a second career for us and the decision to come back to school was a difficult one, but gratefully now we are here and enjoying what Provo and the BYU Law School offers.

Being involved with Law Partners during this first year of my husband’s law school has been a lot of fun. I have met some wonderful ladies and have appreciated who they are and what they have to offer in life. I’d like to serve as Secretary on the Law Partners Board to help associations like these grow among us. During this past year I think that Law Partners has done well in providing a variety of fun and meaningful activities, and I hope to continue this tradition in order to fulfill all sorts of interests. Specifically as Secretary, I will help facilitate organization and clarity about the Law Partners happenings. And finally, through my service I look forward to helping us spouses of law students feel encouraged, supported and even find great happiness during these brief, yet sometimes seemingly long, years of the law school process.

Erin Urrutia

I am Erin Urrutia (you-roo-tee-uh), I’m from California (S.F. Bay Area), I’ve been married for 3 years, and am pregnant with our first (due the end of July). I graduated from BYU-Idaho with a BS in Communications (minor in Information Systems and Graphic Design) and I work full-time in SLC. My favorite things in the world are probably camping on the lake and eating out (love the atmospheres). I like running, eating ice cream sundaes, writing, snowboarding, organizing and meeting new friends. I believe in hard work and the power of a positive attitude.

After having such a positive experience and creating great friendships within Law Partners, I really want to help other members achieve the same. The duties of the LP Secretary are right up my alley; I love design, I love learning about new people and I love keeping a calendar to be organized. I studied graphic design in college and absolutely love it, especially typography. With this passion, I would look forward to designing the newsletter every month. I would enjoy collecting biographies from LP members to include in the newsletter, thus allowing me to get to know the spouses as individuals as well as about their families. Last, my obsession with keeping a calendar would come in more than handy when keeping the calendar of events for law partners. I am organized, love writing and really would just love to help with the LP program this year.

Alison Love

I feel like I am at a point in my life where I want to be involved in as many things that I can. I want to make the most of the time that I have and the opportunities that I am presented with. I know this time in my life is a unique one…my husband is a first year law student, we have a brand new little girl, neither of us is employed; we have experienced a lot of changes. I want to be able to be involved in something where I can form new friendships and experience this unique time in my life with others that are in very similar circumstances. I feel like being involved as much as I can with Law Partners is something that can help me obtain this goal of making new friendships and making the most of this time in my life. I would be honored to hold the position of Secretary of Law Partners; however, whether I am Secretary or not, I am determined to make the most of the situation and to form as many of those friendships as possible.

Arizona. I am from Glendale, Arizona, but have lived in Utah for about seven years now.

Love. My last name.

I love to spend time with my family, exercise, read, sew, and watch favorite TV shows with my husband.

Spanish. I got my BA in Spanish from BYU in December 2006.

One day I would love to have my husband back full-time; it has been a hard adjustment having him studying all of the time.

Norah. Our new little girl, who joined our family on December 23, 2009. I am amazed every day at how much I can love this sweet girl.

Shelf Reliance Group Order

All,

We are beginning another series of group purchases for Shelf Reliance products. And for those scrapbooking fans out there we are also working with Roberts Crafts to do a group purchase on some of their most popular products.

For now pleaes let me know the products you are most interested in from Shelf Reliance. Examples -

Free Standing rotation shelves (3 different sizes and 3 models)
Cansolidators (3 different sizes)
72 hour kit

These are great deals we are getting. On some of the shelves we are knocking off almost $200 if enough people buy! This is open to friends, family, ward members, etc. This year will be even easier because we are using a website instead of the previous email and google doc. The website is easy to use. You will register your name and info then specify the price you are willing to pay and the number you want. Remember - IF YOUR PRICE IS NOT MET YOU WILL NOT PAY! That means you will ONLY pay the price you want or better if the final price drops below what you set. You will NEVER pay more than the price you set. And it will be easy to see how many people are already committed to know whether or not the price you set will likely happen. Also in the site you can easily notify others about this group deal by email, facebook or twitter with a single click.

More details to come and if you have any questions please contact me.
