Each month we will post discussion questions every about the current months book on both the blog and the Google Group. Feel free to respond in either place. September's Book is The Goose Gril by Shannon Hale.
What did you like/dislike about the book?
Have you read any other work by Hale? How does it compare?
Near the end of the book it is assumed Selia will get the treatment she ordered for Ani (being drug through the city in a barrel stabbed with nails). Do you think Ani will go through with the order for Selia, or change it because of her history with Selia? What would you do if you were Ani?
Are you surprised by Geric's true identity?
Although Ani has the gift of animal-speaking, she is forced to hide it from others. How would her life been different if this had been a valued gift in her own kingdom? Do you think sometimes we hide our talents/opinions out of fear? What are the consequences of our decisions?
Are you surprised by Enna's loyalty?
In traditional fairy tales, the main character is rescued by another person. In this case, Ani saves herself. Do you think this type of story is more valuable than the alternative?
If you had to choose the name of a character from the book to name your child, which name would you choose? Do the roles and characteristics of the character influence your decision?
Do you believe the queen really loved her daughter if she was able to deny her daughter's birthright? Do we sometimes do harsh things to people who we love, to help them, not hinder them?
If you were to produce a movie of The Goose Girl, whom would you cast in each role?
